Just a stone’s throw away from the pulsating heart of Dakar, Senegal, I find myself in a unique refuge known as the Ngor Surf Camp. This enchanted sanctuary is situated on the serene Ile de Ngor, an unspoiled gem of beauty and rich culture just off the coast of Senegal’s capital. The island is small in size, merely 800 by 210 meters, yet it radiates an immense character and charm, offering an idyllic sanctuary from Dakar’s urban bustle.
Golden beaches bathed in resplendent sunlight converge with the turquoise Atlantic waters, creating a playground for sunbathers, swimmers, and surfers. Venture beyond the shoreline, and the island reveals an array of narrow, winding sand alleys, brightly colored traditional huts, and a local community of fishing families. This journey into daily life, adorned with artisanal crafts, music, and seafood, solidifies Ile de Ngor as a tranquil haven of cultural richness and sensory delight. For the span of a week, I have the privilege of calling this paradise my temporary home.
Stumbling upon the Ngor Surf Camp with no prior knowledge of surf camps was a pleasant discovery for me. Despite being one of the only accommodations offering a hostel-like stay in all of Dakar, the camp appealed to me with its unique character. For just $42 a night, we are given dormitory-style accommodation complete with two daily meals, prepared family-style for the entire camp. Additionally, the camp orchestrates surf expeditions throughout Dakar and the island, taking into account various factors like tides, weather, and even the presence of jellyfish.
The camp is a vibrant melting pot, with individuals from every corner of the world adding their unique flavor to the thriving surf community. This congregation includes a laid-back surf photographer from Western Australia, an audacious American who thrives on riding mammoth waves over 25 feet high, and a kind-hearted girl from India, relentlessly perfecting her surfing skills from the shores of her home country to the coasts of Africa. Our diverse roll call incorporates individuals from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and beyond. Furthermore, the camp is powered by the contributions of local Senegalese surfers and others from West African countries such as Sierra Leone and Benin. These experienced surfers also serve as staff and skilled surf guides and continually spread good vibes throughout the camp.
Among this dynamic blend of enthusiasts, you’ll find me – your friendly neighborhood amateur. My surfing prowess, or lack thereof, is evident from the fact that I’ve only surfed couple of times, even managing to put on my wetsuit incorrectly on the first day. Yet, I embrace my role as a symbol of encouragement for all fellow ‘kooks’ venturing into the thrilling waters of surfing.
I chose this locale for several reasons. Primarily, I wished to meet fellow travelers and experience a laid-back week on an island, which means going barefoot, shirtless, and savoring the tastes of juicy mangoes and freshly caught fish. Such a setting was much needed, especially after a strenuous two-week land journey that covered over 1500 miles, starting from Morocco, passing through Mauritania, and ending in Senegal. On the flip side, many others find themselves drawn to this surf camp on this beautiful West African island due to their deep-seated love for surfing and its welcoming community. The intriguing blend of such diverse motivations creates an intimate setting that fosters engaging conversations and the development of new friendships.
As an outsider stepping into this vibrant world, I’ve been captivated by the narratives, language, and experiences that surround the surfing lifestyle. Immersing myself in this lifestyle has unveiled a captivating truth: a shared passion that unifies people across the globe, transcending language barriers and cultural disparities. This environment has finally spurred me to act on a blog idea that’s been simmering in my phone’s ‘notes’ app. If you’ve been following my other blog posts, you’d know that they’re all underpinned by one insatiable passion: to inspire individuals to view life through a mindful lens that celebrates our planet’s beauty, encourages personal growth, and kindles a spirit of adventure through meaningful travel.
Travel, as I interpret it, extends far beyond the confines of mere vacationing. It functions as a robust instrument for augmenting knowledge, expanding perspectives, and deepening one’s comprehension of humanity’s diverse aspects. The essence of travel, to me, lies in understanding the universal threads that bind us together, irrespective of geographical divides and cultural dissimilarities. All while developing certain mindsets of awareness, adaptability, appreciation and enjoyment that can translate to all aspects of life. When I first started traveling, my ambitions reached far beyond a fleeting break to tick off popular tourist attractions. Instead, I yearned for richer, more profound experiences. And I did this by way of working, taking classes, or volunteering in places that I wanted to go.
The allure of uncovering foreign territories and immersing myself in diverse cultures has held a steady charm throughout my life. With every sunrise, my wanderlust is not only undiminished but seemingly more voracious than the day before. However, as the sands of time shift, so too have my travel preferences.
In the past, my global adventures were often intertwined with work, learning, or volunteering opportunities. I relished the rich depth these immersive activities brought to my travel experiences. Yet, as my professional life back in the US has grown more demanding, the ample time once afforded for such engagements has significantly dwindled.
Today, with the temporal constraints of my career, dedicating extensive durations to volunteering, taking classes, or participating in various overseas work has become increasingly challenging. In response to this evolution, I have found myself aligning my journeys more closely with a deeply personal passion. As the years have unfolded, this reorientation of my travels has unfolded naturally, offering a compelling new dimension to my global explorations.
A recent testament to this harmonious blend of passion and travel unfolded during my stay at a surf camp. While I don’t harbor an intense passion for surfing per se, I’ve cultivated an appreciation for the sport, both for the challenges it offers and the opportunities it affords to discover breathtaking island beach landscapes all around the world , influenced by nutrition and fitness, and surrounded by like-minded individuals around the world. My role at the camp allows me to adopt a fascinating position as an observer. I find myself immersed in a vibrant, international amalgamation, attentively observing surf enthusiasts hailing from Switzerland, the USA, Austria, Germany, France, and, significantly, Senegal.
This global community is bound by a unified dialogue, steeped in the universal language of surfing – a shared lexicon that encompasses everything from high tides, low tides, surfing the pocket, to breaks, and an array of board brands and types. Yet, the shared ethos extends beyond the surfing vernacular. I’ve discerned a unique synthesis of importance placed on nutrition, fitness, and the palpable aura of being grounded, kind-hearted individuals. Perhaps it’s the hours spent in the ocean each day, braving the mighty waves, or the profound humbling effect of being surrounded by the vast, deep ocean on a daily basis that roots them in such a demeanor. It’s indeed intriguing to witness how a shared passion can forge such strong bonds among like-minded individuals, despite the myriad of unique variables that constitute their lives.
Although I may not possess a fervent dedication to surfing that aligns with my travels, I have unearthed a profound passion that I’ve deftly woven into my travels over the years – high-altitude trekking and mountaineering. The mountains provide a platform for pursuing ambitious objectives, setting challenging goals, and pushing my personal limits, all while exploring the globe and immersing myself in the camaraderie of like-minded enthusiasts. My alpine adventures have transported me from the majestic heights of Nepal and Pakistan to the rolling highlands of Bolivia, Peru, and the highest peak of Africa in Tanzania. Each expedition propels me to engage more profoundly with the world, conquer personal milestones, and embrace forthcoming challenges.
My current global journey, spanning a period of ten months, devotes a significant portion of its final phase – approximately three to four months – to mountain-focused pursuits. The itinerary includes taking on the formidable Himalayan ranges, partaking in intensive training in Thailand, and indulging in the towering vistas of Patagonia of close to 7,000 meters (23,000ft). Although these adventures present formidable challenges, they encapsulate the exhilaration and fulfillment that stems from harmonizing my travel experiences with my deep-seated passion.
The recent unearthing of my passion for mountaineering has propelled this quest to unprecedented heights, fostering the development of unique attributes and skillsets that transcend into various aspects of my life. Each new journey introduces me to a fascinating array of individuals, tests the boundaries of my capabilities, and instills a profound sense of resilience, inspiration, and gratitude.
Aligning passions to travel has providing the opportunity to spend extended periods in one location, deeply integrating oneself within local communities, fulfilling personal desires, satiating curiosity, setting and achieving goals, encountering like-minded individuals, and establishing connections with people from around the globe. Additionally, it fosters the chance to contribute to, and truly become a part of, the local community, engendering enduring bonds and relationships. Each purpose-infused journey unfurls multiple layers of understanding about the world and myself, enriching my life with every step I take. By genuinely immersing myself in the communities I visit, I am blessed to create connections that extend beyond mere acquaintances, blossoming into lifelong friendships.
So now I invite you, to ponder upon this: Are you yearning for a deeper, more enriching travel experience? How can you forge your travel with a higher purpose and a deeper connection to the world?
