The French Riviera has spent more than a century being photographed as if everyone there owns a yacht. Most people are waiting for a train with sand in their shoes.
That is part of what makes the coast work. Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Èze and Menton sit close enough to share a journey but retain distinct personalities. The railway handles much of the coastline, which means you can build the trip around one or two bases instead of changing hotels every night in pursuit of efficiency.
Nice is the natural center. The Promenade des Anglais faces the broad curve of the bay, while the old town compresses markets, churches, narrow streets and socca into a few walkable blocks. Climb Castle Hill for the view, then return to street level before the city becomes nothing but scenery.
Antibes feels more intimate, with an old center, a working harbor and a coastal path around Cap d’Antibes. Cannes carries the film-festival mythology, but away from the red carpet it is still a Mediterranean town with ferries running to the quieter Îles de Lérins.
Èze makes its case vertically. The hilltop village is small, polished and rarely empty, but the view explains the crowds better than any brochure. Farther east, Menton sits close to the Italian border and lets the architecture, gardens and food show how little culture respects a line on a map.
Saint-Tropez belongs to the Riviera story but not always to the easiest itinerary. Reaching it can require more road or boat planning than the rail-connected towns, especially when summer traffic thickens. Go because you want Saint-Tropez, not because a list told you the coast is incomplete without it.
Eat what belongs here: socca in Nice, vegetables carrying enough olive oil, seafood near the water and something involving lemon in Menton. The Riviera is expensive in places and crowded in high season, but glamour is only its loudest layer.
The better trip moves between the polished and the ordinary: a museum, a public beach, a market, a train platform, a village after the day-trippers leave. The postcard is accurate. It is simply not the whole coast.
